Voice of the People is a literacy-based educational arts initiative that introduces children to the process of viewing and interpreting contemporary art through multi-disciplinary techniques. Voice of the People builds on the child’s observation and response to art in the process of construction meaning from art. Critical thinking, verbal, and written skills are utilized to ultimately create fully produced audio responses for select pieces of works from the museum’s permanent collection and featured exhibitions which are then shared with all visitors of the museum.

Audio guides may be downloaded to an ipod or mp3 player or visitors have the ability to check out an ipod at the front desk. Through a special feature offered by Guide by Cell (904) 229-0968 visitors can access the audio guides by cell phone and are encouraged to provide feedback by leaving a voice mail message in response to their museum experience.

Fourth grade students from S. P. Livingston Elementary have created the following audio guides that describe, analyze, and interpret works of art from MOCA’s Permanent Collection. In result, the teachers have reported improved critical thinking, writing and oral communication skills as well as increased self-esteem and self-awareness.
